This process is not having a mechanical hammer in real. You might have noticed a sound during closure of tap . We can notice the sound and vibration clearly . That is basically called water hammering.
Reason: due to the sudden closure of the tap, there is a very high change in momentum of the fluid. this generates a pressure wave in the fluid . as a result the wave strikes the surface of pipe and generates sound and vibration.
